Day 18: 9/24/14
Today we will head west. But before we do here are some pics of the vistas from the campgrounds.
The leaves are just starting to turn. |
Breakfast time for the honeybees. Can you find both? |
Somebody snatched the camera and got a pic of me working on the blog. |
When we reached the Penobscot Narrows Bridge we stopped to take the elevator to the second floor observatory. However, the second floor is about 400 feet above the first floor. The elevator ride takes 50 seconds. The glass observation room gives you a 360° view of the Penobscot River basin out to Penobscot Bay. The bridge is 447 feet tall. The center span is 800 feet with an overall span of 2120 feet. Clearance above the water is 135 feet.
Fort Knox |
Near the Penobscot Narrows Bridge is Fort Knox. This area was captured by the British in both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to defend the cities of Bangor and others upstream from future incursions.
10 Inch Rodman Cannon |
Business end of a 10 inch cannon |
Underground food storage. |
Officers Quarters |
We spent the night at the Howard Johnson's in Bangor right next to the airport and watched as a C5 Galaxy shoot approaches to the airport.
