Sunday 9/15/13 Rose Blanche Lighthouse

The forecast last night said today would be partly sunny, temps around 16°C or 70°F. We woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the roof.  After our morning devotions, you can guess where we went for breakfast!  By the time breakfast was over the skies slowly started to break.    Arlene, here at the campground, mentioned to us the other day, that we might want to see Rose Blanche Lighthouse.  That would be a trip backtracking to Port aux Basque about 25 miles then continue east on the southwestern coast another 25 miles.  That sounds like a good idea. We had no idea what lay in store for us today.

As we backtracked we got to see the Long Range Mountains and the Southwest Coast that we missed due to the fog.  The farther south we went the more the terrain changed.  We noticed fewer trees, more rock and beautiful shore lines.  After passing Port au Basque we left the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and started east on route 470.  It’s more of a narrow, winding, hilly, country road with pot holes that will rival any back in PA.

The Lighthouse was made from quarried granite in the early 1870’s.  Over time it deteriorated into ruins.  In the 1990’s a restoration started and in only three years they had it back to original using mostly the granite block that was still on site.

On the way back we stopped in Maragree for a late lunch/early supper at the Seaside Restaurant.  This is undoubtedly the best meal I have had since we started this trip.  Local fresh fishcakes, baked potato, and mixed vegetables and a dessert of Partridgeberry pudding (bread pudding) covered with a brown sugar sauce.  Linda enjoyed a delicious chicken alfredo.   I have a hunch on the way back in a week or two; someone might just make a wrong turn off route 1 and end up in Maragree!

Yep we had no idea what lay in store…  We had a terrific day of seeing God’s handy work up close and personal.

(Ok…I have to give credit to the Seaside cook too.)
