CANADA…(Red Bay or Bust)

For quite some time, many years to be exact, I have wanted to see Nova Scotia.  So, Linda said, since she had her trip of a lifetime down the ICW on the boat, now it is my turn to take a trip to Canada.  The planning started with maps and a trip to AAA for travel and camping information.  After a while I realized if we would catch the ferry in North Sydney NS we could be in Newfoundland in about six hours.  Then as I looked over Newfoundland I discovered if we drove 325 miles north along the western coast to Sainte Barbe, we could catch a 1hour ferry ride to Blanc-Sablon, Quebec; then go another three miles north to the border of Labrador.

Labrador…How many people do you meet that have ever traveled to Labrador??  With a few subtle hints spread out over the next few days, (you know the kind of hints you gave Mom and Dad about that new bike for Christmas) Linda thought that would be a neat idea too.  Then studying about Labrador I read about the Trans-Labrador Highway (Canada Route 500/510).  The TLH is 1185 Km (736 miles) long. Only the first 50 miles of Route 510 into southeast Labrador is paved; then it becomes a wide gravel surfaced highway at the town of Red Bay.  That’s as far as we can go on paved road.   So let’s make Red Bay our ultimate destination.

With that settled… the next thing to do is pack up and go!
