Just after breakfast we left Flagstaff for the South Rim of
the Grand Canyon. That’s about an 80
mile drive (nothing is close out here!).
On the way in there are several smaller canyons that find their way
like tributaries into the main canyon.
AZ-64 comes close to a few.
Soon after passing this sign we almost hit a coyote. |
The first glimpse of the Canyon is at the Desert Watch
Tower. While it looks like a building
built a thousand years ago in fact it is a façade over a steel frame. The South Rim is a bustling place and we
didn’t take time to climb the tower.
The South Rim offers many more vantage points to see the Canyon than the North Rim did.

The Visitor's Center was quite busy. The trail that follows the Canyon was packed with tourists.
One Pug on a leash and one in the bag. |
There was the ruins of an Anasazi Village found by archeologist near the rim.
Again pictures cannot display the enormity of the
Canyon. I have a few shots with
accompanying close-ups to help but I’m afraid they fall a bit short.
Normal view. Notice the small green oasis in the center. |

Zoomed at 40 X... It's a resort on the floor of the Canyon. |
As we were leaving the parking lot Linda started saying "Buck...buck...buck". There he was with people all around just browsing in the grass along the drive. At one point if she would have opened the door she would have probably bumped him.
We chose to take UA-180 back to Flagstaff. It gave some spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks.
When we arrived back at Flagstaff we were listening to the
local news and heard about the tragic shooting on the campus that day.
