Farewell for now. |
We really enjoyed our time with Rich and Gail. After we had the morning walk
Rich fixed everybody breakfast. (this guy is a good cook) We said our
goodbyes and were on the road at 10:45A. Linda drove today because I took some of the
muscle relaxant. That stuff really works
but, it relaxes you brain too. We took a trip back into Montrose to fill up with
gas.
Yes, that is my foot ready to "kick the bucket". Actually I pushed the shutter by mistake. |
At the end of the road that leads from Rich and Gail's going back to US-50 is a small village called Colona. These pictures capture about every building there.
Last night Linda had nightmares
about today. She knew she would have to
drive on these mountain roads (CO-63 & 145) with "S" curves, hairpin turns, with no shoulders, no guard rails and drop-offs of
several hundred feet. She did real well
but it was getting to her so after about an hour she found a pull off and had a
meltdown. After a few minutes she pulled
back on the road and drove to the town of Rico, Co.
There is about a 300 ft. drop here. |
This one has another 300 ft. drop. The line in the background is the same road after a switch-back going the other direction. |
We had lunch in Rico, Co. Apparently once a mining town it is more of a
deserted town. Almost every building is
for sale except for the Enterprise Bar and Grill and the liquor store. Go
figure. A young couple said they opened The
Galloping Goose about a month ago. Linda
and I looked at each other and thought why would you open a café here? We wish them luck.

The line of cars are customers for the Galloping Goose Café. Only one of other buildings is occupied and it is a real estate office. |
These two ain't fer sale. |
Ok, so just what is a Galloping Goose? Open the link and find out. Its a piece of local history.
Back on the road and we arrived
in Cortez, CO around 2:40P. We drove
around a little bit then settled into our hotel room for a well needed
rest. Linda was pooped. Best part for her… her own easy chair in the
room and there is a Denny’s next door.
PS. She really did a great job of driving the van. Something she is not used to. Kudos Kid!
