Day 22 Wednesday 9-30-15 Montrose, CO with Rich and Gail

We first met Rich and Gail back around 1979.  Rich and I did a complete overhaul of the Champion airplane he had.  At that time they were living in Springfield, VA but at his retirement they pulled up stakes and moved to Montrose, CO.  Well kind of Montrose.  Things out here are a bit more spread out than we’re used to.  They have a Montrose address although they live 15 miles, as the crow flies, or a 20 mile drive south of town.

Rich and Gail’s spread is covered in piñon pines and has quite a range of wildlife.  Rich showed us pictures from his trail cam of bear, cougar, and deer.

Linda got pictures of deer right next to the dog run fence.  The deer seem to know the dogs can’t get through the fence. Spook, the Black Lab, loves to take off after the deer and bark at them, then come back to the rear patio and lay down with paws crossed and head up as if “I showed that deer who is boss".

Richard is a volunteer with the Ouray County EMS involved in ambulance and rescue services.  This morning he was on the road to the town of Ridgeway at 5:00A.

When I woke up I thought I might have to have his ambulance come and get me!  I woke up with such muscle spasms that it took about two minutes for me to get out of bed.  Linda had to dress me.  In about half an hour we were at Mountain Peaks Urgent Care where I was given a prescription for muscle relaxer.  It’s strange to me how moving around, which is painful, is the best way to relieve the pain, but it worked.

We drove to Ridgeway to meet Rich for lunch at the True Grit Café and by this time I was pretty mobile.  However, just after lunch the medicine pulled the plug on my energy and I couldn’t keep my eyes open.  Linda drove me back to the house and I slept for hours while she and Gail caught up on the last 30 years.

Ridgeway is the town where the 1969 movie “True Grit” starring John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glenn Campbell was filmed.  Many scenes were shot in the town park and the buildings of Ridgeway made the backdrop.
